Maxine was the sweetest person most of us ever knew — the kind of school nurse who remembered every student's name, and usually a little more than the scrape on their knee too. For years, the nurse's office at Wink‑Loving ISD was less a place kids dreaded and more a place they were glad to land, because Maxine was on the other side of the door.
Away from school, she was, first and always, a mother to her three daughters — Danita, Susan, and Kim — and grandmother to five grandchildren who adored her. On weekends you'd find her on a golf course somewhere in the Basin, more interested in the company than the scorecard, or making the trip up to Cloudcroft, New Mexico, one of her favorite places to be. She also made it a point to visit her brother Buddy in Cherokee Village, Arkansas — family mattered to her, and she was always there to help those in need.
In 2010, she lost her fight with cancer. This scholarship exists so her name — and the way she made people feel — doesn't stop at a headstone. It keeps showing up, every year, in the life of a student she never got the chance to meet.
